Summer is coming to an end and time to start thinking about closing up your vacation home. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Clean and close off each room as you go. Start at the back of the house so that when you finish, you will be at the front door.

  2. Use plastic to store bedding and mattresses to protect them until next year.

  3. If the house has gas, turn off the gas supply and turn off all circuit breakers except for those feeding the security system.

  4. Disconnect all appliances, including stoves, washers, dryers, and all televisions and telephones. This will protect your appliances against lightning.

  5. Remove all  food from the refrigerator, freezer and cupboards.

  6. Shut off the water from the main valve. Drain the water in the lines by opening all faucets, including the outside hose bibs.

  7. Store outdoor furniture and cushions, grills, hoses and any other accessories you may have.

  8. Take out all the garbage, clean the garbage cans and then store them. Before you leave, take the garbage to the dump.

  9. Secure sheds, outside cabinets, and garage doors.

  10. Lock all house windows, set the security alarm and make sure all doors are locked and completely secure.
