8 Things To Do Before Showing Your House

Before open houses or showings, there are several important steps you can take to be sure everything goes well and the house makes a good impression:

  1. Remove the clutter  You should spend some time clearing off counters, packing away or putting into storage unnecessary items and furniture. Do the same with the garage.

  2. Clean Be prepared to do some heavy cleaning, including all windows, floors, walls, tubs and more. Check out the curtains and blinds to be sure they are sparkling, and if not, consider replacing. You may need to enlist a cleaning service, but it will be worth the cost.

  3. Take care of minor repairs Check for and replace or repair any leaking faucets, squeaky doors or peeling paint. These may seem relatively unimportant to you, but will be noticeable to a home buyer.

  4. Perform the sniff test You should open the windows to allow the house to air out completely. Several other remedies to control odor include putting citrus rinds in the garbage disposal and placing potpourri around the house.

  5. Bathroom Remove all personal toiletry items and be sure that the shower curtains and rugs are in mint condition. If they are not, be sure to replace them.

  6. Exterior Mow the lawn and trim the hedges and add a few flowering plant pots near the door.

  7. Pets If at all possible, have pets out of the house during the showing. If this is not possible, then be sure to secure them in a crate.

  8. Leave the house  Do not be home for the showing as it is very awkward.
