Spring is here, and it’s time to beautify your garden or grow some healthy veggies. Enjoy the season, but be sure to make safety a priority. Please see the following tips from the Center for Disease Control.

Dress to protect.

  • Wear long pants, safety goggles and closed shoes when using power tools.

  • Wear gloves to protect your hands from cuts and contaminants.

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET to protect yourself from mosquitoes and ticks. Extra precautions include wearing long sleeves and tucking your pants into your shoes.

  • To avoid overexposure to the sun, wear wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, sunglasses, and sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more.

Put safety first.

  • Follow instructions on chemicals and lawn equipment.

  • Sharpen tools carefully.

  • Keep all chemicals, tools and equipment out of children’s reach.

Know your limits in the heat.

  • Drink more fluids, avoiding high sugar drinks and alcohol.

  • Be aware that headache, dizziness and nausea are signs of heat-related illnesses

  • To help keep you energized, eat healthy foods.

Enjoy the benefits of physical activity.

  • Be active for at least 2 ½ hours a week with activities that raise your breathing and heart rates.

Get vaccinated.

  • Be sure that your tetanus/diphtheria vaccinations are up to date.
