NOLA 4 Women is a non-profit organization that focuses on women whose contributions have helped to build New Orleans as well as those women who continue to build the city. To showcase these women and their contributions, NOLA 4 Women has assembled a selection of exhibits demonstrating their achievements. The exhibits are titled Women of New Orleans: Builders and Rebuilders. You can visit the exhibits at various locations throughout the New Orleans area. Here are 2 samples:

  1. Women and Social Justice: Janet Mary Riley. Janet Riley holds many titles including lawyer, librarian and social reformer. She was the first woman to be a full-time law faculty member and she helped repeal the Head and Master Law. The repeal of this law made women equal partners in a marriage. The Janet Mary Riley exhibit is located in the Monroe Library at Loyola University through April 2018. Loyola University is located at 6363 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70118

  2. Women in Historical Healthcare: Pharmacy and Midwifery. Ursuline Sister Francis Xavier is credited with being the first woman pharmacist in N. America. She compounded her plants to make special medicines and special teas that were given to patients at Royal Hospital in New Orleans during the 18th century. Also during the 18th century, midwifery was the most common method of childbirth. The exhibit discusses this practice and highlights some well-known midwives from the 18th and 19th centuries. You can visit this exhibit at the Pharmacy Museum, 514 Chartres Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 through June 2018.
