If you are a DIYer involved in remodeling your home, you should be aware of the code guidelines before beginning the project. Here are 7 of the most common remodeling mistakes made by DIYers:

  1. Working Without a Permit  Although you do not need a license to do the remodeling, you should find out which projects require a permit before starting. You can easily do this by checking with local authorities.

  2. Not Testing Older Materials for Asbestos and Lead  Be sure to check for the presence of asbestos and lead on the property. Today, stringent laws protect people from the hazardous effects of these materials. You can purchase inexpensive kits to test for the presence of asbestos and lead.

  3. Improper Fastening of Deck Ledgers to Houses  2 common mistakes people make in constructing decks are: 1) Improper flashing, and 2) using old fashioned methods to secure the deck. Have the deck inspected yearly and do repairs, if needed.

  4. Adding a Basement Bedroom Without an Egress Window  Before building the basement bedroom, be aware that Codes require all sleeping areas to have an egress window.

  5. Venting a Bath Fan Into an Attic  When you vent a bath fan into an attic, you risk the possibility of causing mold or rot because of the humidity. Air must be vented to the outside of the house.

  6. Botched Electrical Work  Use caution when doing your own wiring as mistakes may cause devastating results involving the wrong size circuit, splicing wires without a junction box and missing GFCI’s.

  7. Not Following Fence Height Requirements Most problems occur when homeowners build fences that are too high. Investigate this first as you may be required to tear it down.
