Irish immigrants brought to the U.S. these lively St. Patrick’s Day celebrations from Ireland and created a tradition here in the United States. Boston was the first place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, dating back to 1737. New York followed in 1762 and included a march with their celebration, which is still in existence today. In New Orleans, people gather dressed in green to watch the floats pass and like Mardi Gras, they hope to catch throws such as carrots, potatoes, Moon Pies, and cabbage. Along with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, New Orleans combines several other celebrations including parades St. Joseph’s Day, Italian-American Day, Irish-Italian Parade and more.
