How To Prevent Mold In Your Home
Most people are aware of the dangers associated with mold such as respiratory and digestive problems, joint inflammation, depression and other ailments, but there are some steps that you can take in order to prevent mold altogether. The most essential element in preventing mold is in humidity control, which experts place at 55%. Humidity, or the amount of moisture in the air, can be read with a hygrometer. If the hygrometer reading is high, then you may need to install a dehumidifier to remove the excess moisture from the air. Other possible causes for mold formation include water leaks from bathtubs, sinks and hot water heaters, water seeping in from loose fitting window frames, and leaks from the roof that may enter the attic causing high humidity. In addition, always do the following to help prevent mold:
Wipe up any water spills
Fan dry carpeting when wet
Wipe down tubs and showers after use
Use exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen to control humidity
To remove mold from non-porous surfaces such as tiles, tubs, sinks, glass etc, mix one cup of bleach in one gallon of water and apply with spray bottle or a rag. Fumes from chlorine bleach may be strong, so ensure proper ventilation while working.
