How To Sell Your House When You Have A Pet

Of course you love your pet!  But you certainly don’t want your pet to ruin your chances of selling your home in St. Tammany. Here are some tips to help you:

  • Check your homeowner’s insurance. Be sure that it covers you if your pet bites or injures a potential buyer. The best advice is to keep the animal outside during the house tour.

  • Prepare your yard. Check to be sure there are no brown or yellow spots where your pet’s pee has discolored the grass. Also check for and remove any waste in the yard. Before you put your house on the market, you should re-seed and add new sod where needed.

  • Remove the odors. We do become “nose blind” after a while, so be sure to have someone give you his/her honest opinion about whether or not the house has an odor. If it does, there are products that contain odor destroying enzymes.  Be extremely careful to completely remove the odor because sometimes they reappear and former homeowners have been sued for not disclosing the problem.

  • Clean up the hair. Be sure to dust and vacuum before showing your home. Some people may have allergies and start sneezing as soon as they enter the house.

  • Hide the evidence. Like most pet owners, you probably have lots of objects lying around, such as toys, collars and leashes. Although these objects are special to you, they will just be clutter to buyers. Be sure to hide everything before showing the house.

  • Say good-bye to your pets (just for a while!). You should at least move your pet to another area of the house prior to the showing. It would be best, though, to remove your pet from the house to stay with a friend or family member. By doing that, you will be able to totally concentrate on selling your house and not worry about your pet.
