Do you know that there is a quick and easy way to peel a crab? Here are the steps to follow:

  • Place the top shell of the crab down in order to collect the juices. Remove the abdominal segment, then place a butter knife or tuck your thumb inside the crab and pull down and away to separate the shell from the other parts of the crab.

  • Pull out and throw away the gills/dead man’s fingers

  • Break the crab in half

  • Gently crack off the largest swimming leg and remove. This is where you will find most of the lump crab. Most of the jumbo lump crabmeat is connected to the two back legs

  • Pull off the large claw and put aside.

  • Now pick up the crab half and gently squeeze together. You will hear a cracking sound. Separate this half into two pieces

  • Remove the remaining legs where you will see lump crabmeat

  • Break the big claw in half by using a nutcracker or hit it with a butter knife to open the shell. Gently rock and pull the crabmeat out from the claw.
