The Old US Mint In New Orleans Past And Present

For most of the 19th century, New Orleans produced millions of coins at the Old U.S. Mint building, which opened in 1838.   Coins minted in New Orleans identify by the letter “o” appearing on the back bottom center of the coin.  The Old U.S. Mint is the only mint to have produced both American and Confederate coins and is also the only mint to reopen and resume business after the Civil War.

Today the Old US Mint building is home to the New Orleans Jazz Museum, where you can explore everything related to jazz, including interactive exhibits, educational programming for all ages and fantastic musical performances. The New Orleans Jazz Museum partners with local, national and international educational institutions an understanding of jazz and its impact on history. The Jazz Collection is the largest of its kind in the world and features instruments, sheet music, records, photographs and much more.
