If you are interested in exploring New Orleans history and culture, be sure to check out the museum at the Old Ursuline Convent at 1100 Chartres Street. Built in 1745, The Ursuline Convent is the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley and the oldest example of French colonial architecture still existing in the United States. The building is composed of 12 bays, 2 floors and an attic area comprised of 3 dormers. Many doors and windows were built parallel to each other, creating cross ventilation to cool the air inside. This feature was developed to combat New Orleans’ excessive heat and humidity. Over the centuries, the building has served as a convent for the Ursuline nuns, a school, an orphanage and the Archdiocesan Central Office. In addition, it was a gathering place for the Louisiana Legislature. Today the building is an active museum offering self-guided tours Monday through Saturday.
