Historic Otis House Museum In Madisonville Reflects Old Sawmill Dynasty
If you live in Madisonville, LA or if you are interested in learning about the sawmill community surrounding the Tchefuncte River in Madisonville, check out the Otis House Museum. The historic house and museum are located in the Fairview-Riverside State Park. In 1885 William Theodore Jay purchased some beautiful, pristine land on what would become Fairview-Riverside State Park. When he purchased this land, New Orleans was undergoing a home construction spurt and therefore needed lots of lumber. He built a sawmill to accommodate this need and ended up making a sawmill dynasty with a fortune for himself from the profits. Jay used his fortune to build a gorgeous house featuring 12-foot high ceilings, heart pine floors and wrap around verandas. Today, the house is a museum and has been renovated to resemble the original structure. The last private owner was Frank Otis, who donated the house and the surrounding 99 acres to the state of Louisiana. During a tour of the Museum, you will see a fascinating display of artifacts from 1885 through the 1930’s and you’ll also learn how Madisonville fits into the history of Louisiana as the leader in the sawmill industry. Enjoy this delightful tour and check out the surrounding Fairview-Riverside Park. The Museum tours are available Tuesdays through Saturdays, and admission is just $4 per person and free for children under 3 and also free for seniors 65 and older.
