Lent Traditions In New Orleans

According to the Catholic faith, the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday, the day after Mardi Gras, is a time of fasting and prayer as it is in other parts of the world. Catholics and some other Christian faiths go to church on Ash Wednesday, get ashes on foreheads and give up meat on Fridays until Easter Sunday when Lent is officially over. In New Orleans, however, giving up meat means bringing on the crawfish and other delectable seafood dishes so popular in New Orleans. Lent coincides with the crawfish season, which for many people, is an occasion for crawfish boils, get-togethers and drinking parties. For seafood lovers, the fasting season turns into feasting. Then about a month into the Lenten season, parades start again with numerous St. Patrick’s Day.
