National Oyster Day Is August 5
Oyster lovers, get ready for Saturday, August 5, 2017 when we celebrate the slimy, yet ever so addictively tasty oyster! You can expect to see deals for oysters on the half-shell at many local restaurants and oyster bars. People have been enjoying oysters since the beginning of civilization and oyster farming dates back to the Roman Empire in France and England. In the early 1800’s they were so plentiful in New York that 6 millions oysters were recorded to have been seen on the barges. New York became the largest producer of oysters worldwide, but, unfortunately, the demand became so great that the supply was depleted and when they brought in foreign species, the oyster beds became diseased. Thereafter, the oyster beds were nearly wiped out and oysters became very scarce although the demand remained high. As a result, oysters became a pricey delicacy. If you eat plenty of oysters and hope to find a pearl one day, think again! Only 1 in 10,000 oysters produces a pearl. Oysters remain one of the most popular seafood and we eat approximately 2 billion pounds a year.
