The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum
The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum, whose mission is to bring maritime history to life, is located along the banks of the beautiful Tchefuncte River in Madisonville, Louisiana. To foster an appreciation for maritime history and to accomplish its mission, the museum sponsors a variety of unique and entertaining programs aimed at educating people of all ages. Some of the hands-on programs include activities such as field trips, creating under water robots, and the art of boat building. Every October Madisonville presents The Wooden Boat Building Festival when people from all over Louisiana come to see the large variety of boats and take part in boat building classes. For additional information on The Wooden Boat Festival, see the following link: https://www.woodenboatfest.org/. The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum also has exhibits and publications on display to help teach people about the great importance of Louisiana’s maritime history. Early settlers including Native Americans and European explorers depended on the waterways for survival. Rivers, lakes and bayous were the only means of transportation, of conducting all types of business including importing and exporting of goods and communicating with people in other towns or cities.
