If you are hiring a contractor and would like to be sure you are getting someone with an excellent reputation, check out the following essential questions:

  1. How long have you been in the business? Generally, the most experienced businesses will deliver the highest quality and will complete work on time and on budget.

  2. Do you have a contracting license? You should check to be sure that your contractor is licensed in his field of expertise as different states have different requirements for licensing.

  3. Can I see your certificate of insurance? Check that the contractor has both workers’ compensation and liability insurance in the appropriate field.

  4. Will you obtain the permits and set up the inspections required for this job? Your contractor should know which permits you need and be willing to pull them for you.

  5. What is your timeline for completion? The contractor should be very clear about this and let you know if there are any possible complications that could slow the process.

  6. What is the payment schedule? The Better Business Bureau does not recommend paying upfront, and no reputable contractor should ever ask you for payment in advance. You should thoroughly discuss payment terms and dates so that there are no surprises.
