Wander Jungle Gardens On Avery Island LA
Jungle Gardens is a beautiful quasi-tropical garden located along Bayou Petite Anse on Avery Island where you will see an abundance of lovely flowering plants, birds, wildlife and a magnificent landscape. In addition, there is a 900 year old Buddha statue that sits amidst a sumptuous garden. In 1895 Edward “Ned” McIlhenny, an avid naturalist and conservationist, originally designed Jungle Gardens as a bird sanctuary that he named Bird City and was intended to protect snow egrets. He was the son of E. McIlhenny, the inventor of the famous tabasco sauce. Ned took over the presidency of McIlhenny Tabasco Company in 1898 and remained on Avery Island, where he built his home. In the 1920’s, he began to transform his estate into Jungle Gardens and brought in exotic plants from all over the world and expanded the area to 170 acres. By 1935, Jungle Gardens was opened to the public and became a favorite tourist spot for both local and out of town visitors. Jungle Gardens is located on Highway 329 in Avery Island, LA. Tours are available all year long from 9 AM till 5 PM. You may contact the Gardens by phone at 337-369-6243 or via email at [email protected].
