The Tiny House Movement and the Small House Movement began in response to the economic crisis of 2007-08 and refers to living in small homes that allow you to live a more simple and eco-friendly life.   HGTV currently has a popular series called Tiny House, Big Living.  A tiny house generally measures between 65 to 400 square feet; a small house from 400 to 1,700 square feet, although most small houses do not exceed 1,000 square feet.

If you are interested in learning more about tiny houses, see the list of questions and answers below.

  1. How much does it cost? If you design and build it yourself, it would cost $25,000 - $30,000 for a high end tiny house on wheels. You can do it cheaper, of course, if you use recycled and less expensive materials.

  2. How do I find a place to park the house? RV parks or areas where trailers park. Some people buy a regular house, rent it out and live simply in the tiny house while making a profit. Another idea is to run a free ad on Craigslist for available parking.

  3. Are there any tiny house communities? Yes, there is a growing number of these throughout the United States. For a list of tiny house communities, see the following link: http://tinyhousetalk.com/communities/.

  4. How is sewage handled? You can connect it to a regular septic system or you can set it up like an RV with a holding tank.

  5. Why are the tiny house interiors made of wood? The reason for this is that because of its size, owners can afford more expensive material in place of drywall and faux wood.
